Extended Profile
Request for an Expanded Profile in a Season of Transition Western North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church - Explanation, Background and Submission Form
Request_for_an_Expanded_Profile_1_.pdf
Excerpt: " We exist to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We long to equip local congregations for ministry in their context. Our human efforts and understandings are imperfect and dependent on the power of the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel of John, Jesus tells us that apart from the Vine (Jesus), the branches (the church) can do nothing. (John 15:5) We affirm our belief that Jesus is with us and is praying for us even now. Jesus prays that we may be one (John 17:23) and that we bear much fruit. (John 15:8) This document is one expression of what it means to be in a church where many people, with many perspectives, sit at the table together and seek to make disciples for the transformation of the world. For the sake of the ongoing mission and ministry of local congregations of The United Methodist Church, we are establishing an option for churches to request an Expanded Profile regarding pastoral appointments. We acknowledge that in this time and season, congregations and clergy need to be able to respond to a variety of perspectives on same-sex marriage and ordination standards. We see this option as a tool to guide us all in a transitory, liminal season."
